Reframe - Diverse Images for Healthcare is an initiative led by NHS England, the University of the West of England Bristol (UWE Bristol), and Medical Illustration at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW). The project created a high-quality, standardised image bank to enhance clinical education and diagnostic accuracy. With over 3,000 images representing multiple medical conditions across diverse skin tones, this resource is designed for healthcare professionals, educators, and students to improve diagnostic confidence and support differential diagnosis.
Beyond clinical conditions, Reframe also tackles the under-representation of marginalised groups within imagery of the healthcare workforce. A dedicated collection highlights the diversity of NHS professionals, showcasing individuals from the Global Majority, disabled healthcare professionals, and LGBTQIA+ staff. This initiative aims to promote greater inclusivity in healthcare recruitment, education, and public engagement.
The Reframe image library is an accessible online resource, freely available for medical education, clinical diagnosis, and NHS workforce recruitment materials. All images are professionally captured, standardised, and the clinical images are verified by expert dermatologists to ensure accuracy and reliability.
With continued collaboration from Medical Illustration teams nationwide, Reframe will be a sustainable and evolving resource. By addressing critical gaps in healthcare imagery, this project is transforming medical education, clinical practice, and workforce representation. By reimagining medical imagery, Reframe is transforming the future of equitable healthcare for all.
